        Patriotism 🆚 Nationalism

Patriotism and nationalism are two terms that are often used interchangeably, but they actually have distinct meanings and implications.

Patriotism :

Patriotism refers to a love and loyalty towards one's country, its people, culture, and values. It is often associated with a sense of pride and devotion to the nation's history, achievements, and traditions. Patriotism can be expressed through various means, such as supporting national sports teams, displaying national symbols, honoring national heroes or participating in political activities that promote the well-being of the country.

Nationalism:

Nationalism, on the other hand, refers to an extreme form of patriotism that emphasizes the superiority of one's nation over others. Nationalism often involves a belief in the rightness of one's country's actions, even when those actions may be harmful or unjust. It can be associated with an aggressive or expansionist foreign policy, and intolerance towards other nations or groups that are perceived as inferior. Nationalism can also be linked to a narrow and exclusionary view of national identity, which may exclude certain groups within the country based on race, ethnicity, or religion.

Long story short :

When you love your country and support your government when it deserves it is patriotism.

And when you love your country and government no matter what it does is called nationalism.

Examples of patriotism and nationalism:

👇👇👇👇👇

Example 1: United States

Patriotism: Flag-waving, singing the national anthem, and supporting the country's military and first responders are all ways in which Americans express their patriotism. Celebrating national holidays such as Independence Day or Memorial Day is also a common expression of patriotism.

Nationalism: The phrase "America First" is often used to express a nationalist sentiment, which prioritizes the interests of the United States above those of other countries. Nationalism can also be seen in the belief that America is exceptional and superior to other nations, and that it has a duty to spread its values and way of life to other parts of the world, sometimes by force.

Example 2: India

Patriotism: Indian patriotism can be seen in the love and respect for the country's rich cultural heritage, diverse traditions, and achievements in various fields such as science, technology, and sports. Displaying the national flag, participating in national festivals, and donating to charitable causes are also common expressions of patriotism.

Nationalism: In India, nationalism has been associated with the idea of Hindutva, which is a right-wing political ideology that emphasizes the cultural and religious superiority of Hindus over other minority groups. This has led to discrimination and violence against Muslims, Christians, and other religious minorities. Nationalism can also be seen in the belief that India should assert its dominance in the region and the world,
