                Thanks   Vs   Thank you

Both thanks and thank you express gratitude and appreciation.

While the difference may be considered minor, it exists. It all depends on the circumstances and point of view at that point of time.

Thank you:-

For formal and for certain code of conduct:

If you are in a formal situation, or don't know the person well, or the other person is above you in age or status, say "Thank you". or "Thank you, sir". or "Thank you very much, I appreciate you".

Thanks :

For informal behavior, casual behavior

If it is a casual situation, or you are comfortable with the other person, or he is your friend, you can say "thanks". Note:-

If you say “Thanks a ton,” you are expressing that you are extremely grateful to someone and that they did you a great service by helping you in some capacity.

It can also be used If you are being sarcastic, or really mean the opposite, you can jokingly say "Thanks a lot...for nothing". Or "Thanks a lot!"

However In American English, thanks a ton is atypical in written form. It can only be heard in spoken, not too often though. As others says "thanks a lot", or thanks a million, or thanks a bunch or even thanks much would be spoken and understood more often. Any of those would be informal but not slang usage in written American English.
